DUSSELDORF, Germany, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Renewable energy company Bionersis and German utility E.ON announced a partnership to work on methane recovery from landfills in Southeast Asia.
Bionersis and E.ON Climate & Renewables announced they created a partnership to generate carbon credits and recover methane from landfills and clean energy projects in Southeast Asia.
Under the partnership, Bionersis installs and operates methane recovery and flaring systems on landfills in Asia. The E.ON renewable division will provide technical expertise for gas-fired power.
Biodegradation processes in the decomposition of organic material in landfills give off methane as a byproduct.
The first project for the partnership is at Kamphaeng Saen in Thailand, one of the largest landfills sites in the region.
The gas system for the landfills reduces methane emissions resulting in the production of around 2 million carbon credits. Revenue from the $7.5 million investment will be shared between both companies.
