U.S. energy firm's Bangladeshi contract concerns

DHAKA, Bangladesh, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A U.S. oil firm has asked the Bangladeshi government if its offshore concessions are free from outside interference.

The Daily Star reported Wednesday that ConocoPhillips has asked the government to address its concerns about possible disputes over its two offshore exploration blocks in the Bay of Bengal. A top Petrobangla official speaking off the record said, "They have wanted to know our position if any army vessel from any neighboring country comes to issue any threat against the exploration works."

Both India and Myanmar have objected that the two Bangladeshi gas blocks overlap their territorial waters. Petrobangla Chairman Muktadir Ali said, "We'd heard their statements and queries on different issues in last two days."
