TEHRAN, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Hamstrung by international sanctions, Iran is considering purchasing gasoline from Venezuela to alleviate its chronic fuel shortages.
The Mehr News Agency reported Wednesday that Majlis Energy Committee Chairman Hamid-Reza Katouzian said that the purchases under consideration would be conducted under a bilateral memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and Venezuela. Quoting Oil Ministry officials, Katouzian said that the arrangement is not certain yet and that the volume and price of the gasoline to be purchased is not still clear.
Iran's concerns arise from the threat of increased sanctions to be imposed by the international community if the ongoing dispute over Iran's nuclear energy program is not resolved. Iran insists that the program is strictly for power generation, while a number of foreign governments have expressed deep concerns that it might be masking a covert attempt to develop nuclear weapons.
On Sept. 7 Iranian Oil Minister Masoud Mir-Kazemi announced that if the West bans exporting gasoline to Iran under an increased sanctions regime, then based on its MOU signed with Venezuela, Iran will import Venezuelan gasoline.
