TEHRAN, June 23 (UPI) -- Tehran says it has plans to develop 20 separate oil and gas fields under the terms of a five-year plan that gets under way in 2010, officials say.
Bahan Sorooshi, an official at the National Iranian Oil Co., said part of the development plan includes inviting foreign companies in for bidding, the Platts news service reports.
He pointed to energy giant Gazprom and Tatneft, the sixth-largest oil and gas company in Russia, as potential investors as Tehran looks to Moscow as an energy partner.
Iran is the second-largest oil producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and holds the third-largest reserves of crude oil in the world.
A survey of Iranian oil production from May by Platts shows production levels reached 3.75 million barrels per day, or slightly more than 3 percent of the world's oil.
Iran in 2008 said it was moving closer to developing a relationship with Gazprom Neft, the oil arm of Russian energy monopoly Gazprom, for several onshore fields, but has since failed to unveil any new developments.
