HOUSTON, June 23 (UPI) -- Exxon Mobil unveiled the completion of new gas field processing capacity in the Piceance Basin on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
Exxon Mobil Production Co. operates seven drilling rigs currently in the Piceance Basin, producing around 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
New processing facilities at the field in Rio Blanco County will have the capacity to handle 200 million cubic feet of natural gas each day, the company said in a statement.
"A project such as Piceance represents a long-term view of and commitment to energy development," says Rich Kruger, Exxon Mobil Production Co. president.
Exxon Mobil points to natural gas as a fast-growing emerging fuel source for the generation of electricity. Leases held by Exxon Mobil in the Piceance Basin hold potential reserves of 45 trillion cubic feet of gas.
Piceance natural gas is considered "tight gas" bound in dense rock formations in shale deposits. Extraction, Exxon Mobil says, will use best practice methods with the best environmental conservation techniques available.
