ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, April 15 (UPI) -- The Nord Stream natural gas pipeline from the Baltic Sea will position Germany as a major energy hub for European customers, the Russian premier said.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told visiting former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in St. Petersburg that Nord Stream would serve European interests in energy security, The Moscow Times reports.
"The northern European gas pipeline is in the interests of many European countries, above all Germany and Russia," Putin said.
Schroeder sits on the board of the consortium slated with overseeing the Nord Stream pipeline. He also sits on the board of the embattled Anglo-Russian firm TNK-BP.
Schroeder's visit comes on the heels of talk that Russian gas giant Gazprom, the majority shareholder in Nord Stream, was interested in bringing Gaz de France on board as a minority partner.
The 758-mile Nord Stream dual pipeline would bring close to 2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to European customers each year once both lines commence operations by 2012.
