AMMAN, Jordan, March 31 (UPI) -- The European Commission is planning to fund a solar plant in Jordan that will double as a renewable-energy research facility.
With $13.2 million from the commission, the National Energy Research Center will build a small solar plant that will also serve as a renewable-energy training center for local and regional workers, the commission's delegation in Amman reports.
The plant will be built in Fujeij, near Shobak, and would be capable of generating about 5 megawatts of energy.
The plant is part of the national energy strategy, under which Jordan should be able to generate 600 megawatts of solar energy by 2020.
According to a recent study, about 76 percent of Jordan's citizens are in favor of the government putting more emphasis on installing wind- and solar-energy systems.
