Vattenfall, Nuon partner on climate change

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 3 (UPI) -- Swedish power utility Vattenfall and Dutch power and natural gas utility Nuon announced they will form a company to research carbon-neutral operation.

The new European joint venture is aimed at making carbon capture and storage commercially viable by 2050 through pilot projects both companies are working on.

Carbon capture and storage is viewed by many as the answer to providing cheap energy without emitting greenhouse gases.

Lars Josefsson, chief executive of Vattenfall, said partnering with Nuon will allow Vattenfall to implement its growth strategy.

Vattenfall's goal is to hold a leading position in the European energy and natural gas markets.
