U.K. launches new climate-change research

LONDON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- The U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs launched a new program to study climate change.

The study, "Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change," will address questions about how much climate change is too much and what the world needs to do to avoid too much climate change, the government announced.

Researchers will provide evidence to the government so leaders can develop a climate-change-fighting international agreement and limit greenhouse-gas emissions.

In the findings, there will be a model of future outcomes that consider possible environmental, social and economic consequences for different national responses.

"Government policies are based on robust, up-to-date evidence, and the program will ensure that this continues to be the case by providing the very latest scientific understanding of climate change," Joan Ruddock, an energy minister, said in a statement.
