MOSCOW, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Ukrainian oil and gas company Naftogaz filed a request with Russian energy monopoly Gazprom for reductions in natural gas supplies amid debt concerns.
Naftogaz utilized a provision in its 2009 contract with Gazprom to modify its gas purchases by 20 percent. The Ukrainian company asked for a reduction from 1.41 trillion cubic feet per year to 1.16 trillion, RIA Novosti reports.
Bohdan Sokolovskiy, an adviser to Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on energy issues, also called for immediate discussions for gas supplies from 2010-2019 to reduce future deliveries.
A dispute over gas arrears and contract terms prompted Gazprom to disrupt deliveries to Ukraine in January. The row left European customers scrambling for gas as 80 percent of its Russian gas travels through Ukraine.
The terms of a new contract that ended the dispute allow Gazprom to request a full prepayment for natural gas supplies should Naftogaz fall into debt.
Naftogaz cautioned that its regional utilities were short on payments, prompting Gazprom to warn of another round of gas disruptions if the Ukrainian company did not pay $400 million by March 7.
