ALBUQUERQUE, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A study by U.S. researchers from the Sandia National Laboratories and General Motors suggests that ethanol production could reach 90 billion gallons by 2030.

The U.S. government set a federal mandate for 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel to be blended into gasoline by 2022.

The lofty goal is thought by some to be unobtainable, but according to the study, the United States could create enough ethanol to replace one-third of all the gasoline used in the nation by 2030, DailyTech reports.

GM is so sure of the study's results that it has plans to introduce more cars fueled by E85, an 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline blend.
