Sub-sea oil workers switch gears

LONDON, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- British oil and gas companies are being taught how to take advantage of offshore renewable energy.

According to the New and Renewable Energy Center, there are hundreds of opportunities for oil and gas employees to help develop offshore wind farms, The (Newcastle) Journal reports.

The skills developed by many workers who helped with sub-sea oil and gas projects are needed to erect, maintain and transport energy from marine wind turbines back to land.

There are currently 50 companies in northeast Britain that employee more than 5,000 people in the sub-sea oil sector.

Two North Sea wind farms are already under development, and a third application is in the pipeline.

On each wind farm hundreds of huge turbines will have to be built and maintained.
