ANKARA, Turkey, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Turkey will purchase natural gas from neighboring Iran and Iraq for the Nabucco pipeline to European markets, the Turkish president said.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul told reporters that in order for Nabucco to move forward, it was imperative to "obtain enough gas" from major suppliers, the Iranian Press TV reported.
Meanwhile, Radio Bulgaria reported that Turkey played host to visiting Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov, who met with his Turkish counterpart to discuss bilateral energy deals, including Nabucco.
"Energy cooperation must be a priority in the relations between Turkey and Bulgaria," Parvanov said.
The Bulgarian support follows earlier statements from the Czech Republic. Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek warned Nabucco plans would falter unless it had the backing of the entire European bloc but said Russian aggression in the regional energy sector made the project more attractive.
The United States and the European Union are backing the 2,050-mile pipeline intended to ease European dependency on Russian natural resources.
Nabucco is expected to go online by 2013.
