PRETORIA , South Africa, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- South Africa's Eskom axed its Nuclear-1 plant, but the government has big plans for nuclear power.

The government seized Eskom's decision as an opportunity to release its plans for nuclear energy, Business Day reported.

Nuclear-1 was supposed to lead to the construction of South Africa's second pressurized water reactor nuclear plant, after the Koeberg plant, but raising finances proved too difficult.

Following the announcement, Portia Molefe, director general of the public enterprises department for Eskom, along with energy department officials Nelly Magubane and Tseliso Maqubela, met and let the public know that nuclear power is still part of the country's strategy to diversify its energy mix.

The three announced some changes to the nuclear development plan announced last year. Instead of a commercial process, the government will look for a nuclear technology partner.
