BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Transporting oil through the Baku-Supsa pipeline gives an economic boost to Kazakhstan, the Kazakh ambassador to Azerbaijan said Tuesday.
The 520-mile Baku-Supsa route brings oil primarily from the offshore Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field in the Caspian Sea to terminals in Georgia.
Serik Primbetov, the Kazakh ambassador to Azerbaijan, told reporters at a news briefing Tuesday his country was ready to transport oil from the offshore Kashagan field, the Azeri news agency Today.Az reported.
"The Baku-Supsa pipeline is profitable for Kazakhstan," he said. "We are ready to transport oil to the Black Sea coast by the said pipeline. Everything depends on tariffs on transportation."
Primbetov said in November his country was planning to ferry 120 million barrels of oil per year through the larger Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline by 2012.
Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan then called for a joint venture to launch a feasibility study to examine developing the $3 billion Trans-Caspian oil network.
The Trans-Caspian project includes a tanker transportation system through terminals in both countries with an initial capacity of 500,000 barrels of oil per day and a final volume estimated at 1.2 million barrels per day.
