BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Turkmenistan must state its intent to supply gas to the Western-backed Nabucco pipeline to Europe if the project is realistic, officials said Thursday.
Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilij said in the Azeri capital, Baku, that regional suppliers, including Azerbaijan, must commit to the project from Central Asia through Turkey if Europe is serious about the project, the Azeri Press Agency reported.
His comments come on the heels of a diplomatic tour of Nabucco backers by European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, who said the $12.4 billion project not only will ensure European energy security but also will bring more competition to the oil and gas market.
The Nabucco project is intended to bring some 282 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year to European markets. Europe and the United States see the project as a way to ease regional dependency on Russian natural resources.
Kilij said Europe needs to move aggressively on its responsibilities for the project and not rely exclusively on suppliers.
"The European Union is required to be more active regarding this issue as well," he said.
