ISTANBUL, Turkey, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Production capacity through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline will increase to meet the domestic energy consumption of Turkey, ministers said Friday.

Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said at a roundtable panel in Istanbul with the World Energy Council that BTC transports could more than double, Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet reported.

"To date, 470 million barrels of oil have been transferred via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline," he said. "We plan to increase the capacity of the BTC pipeline to 1.6 million barrels per day."

Domestic energy demand for Turkey increases at an average rate of 7 percent each year, prompting the energy minister to reveal plans for further exploration in the region.

"Thirty percent of Turkey's energy needs are met by domestic sources. We have increased the number of explorations in our seas in the search for oil and gas," he said.

A fire at a pumping station disrupted the flow of oil through the BTC in August. The pipeline, the second-longest in the world, carries about 1 percent of the world's oil.
