BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- It was unclear Monday when oil production from the Central Azeri field would resume as investigators examined the cause of a gas leak, officials said.

BP Azerbaijan halted oil production at the platforms of the West Azeri and Central Azeri fields in the Caspian Sea last week following the detection of a gas leak.

Oil extraction from the field complex was cut nearly in half following the evacuation of platform staff.

Officials at the State Oil Co. of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan International Operating Co. said Monday it was unclear when production would be back to normal, the Azeri Press Agency said.

The oil platforms deliver natural resources through to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which had transports interrupted in early August because of a fire at a pumping station in eastern Turkey.

Officials put the overall estimated output of the Central Azeri field at about 235,000 barrels per day and about 144,000 barrels per day for the West Azeri field.
