TEHRAN, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Iranian officials Monday told Crescent Petroleum of the United Arab Emirates they would seek other markets if price-mechanism talks failed.
Iranian Interior Minister Ali Kordan said Tehran is asking for a substantially higher price for gas exports as the country faces repercussions from Western-backed economic sanctions for its nuclear program.
Kordan said the current price formula would be harmful to the Iranian economy, Emirates newspaper The National reported.
His comments follow similar statements from Iranian Oil Minister Gholamhossein Nozari, who noted the price formula to export gas from the Salman gas field in the Persian Gulf was not yet concluded.
Iran is facing a shortage of natural gas but suffers economically because of sanctions and apprehension to deal with Tehran from members of the global community.
A pipeline from Salman to the Sharjah emirate has been closed since 2006. It has the capacity to transport 600 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
