TEHRAN, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The Indian government agreed to security issues for the Iran-Pakistan-India natural gas pipeline from the Iranian South Pars field, officials said Friday.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said New Delhi gave its assurance that gas supplies through the pipeline would be secure, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
"Iran will seek to establish a trilateral mechanism to reaching an agreement with the aim of securing the delivery of gas at the Pakistan-India border," a ministerial statement said.
A trilateral deal would put the responsibility of the pipeline on all three countries. The deal faces obstacles over security across the proposed 1,724-mile long pipeline and gas pricing concerns.
Iran already began construction on sections of the pipeline in anticipation of the deal, though Indian and Pakistani firms have expressed concern over violating economic sanctions imposed on Iran over its controversial nuclear program.
