ANKARA, Turkey, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Turkish officials said Monday they would sign an energy investment deal with Iran in September following a visit to the region by the Iranian president.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was in Turkey last week to negotiate a $3.5 billion energy deal as part of a broader measure on natural gas in the region. The meeting concluded, however, without a formal agreement.

"We will go to Iran in two weeks and would likely be accompanied by Foreign Minister (Ali Babacan). We will continue our efforts to finalize those works within a month," Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said.

Both countries signed a deal in May to build a pipeline to Turkey from the Iranian South Pars gas field. Guler said a technical analysis of the field has been completed and will be presented to Iranian officials Thursday, Turkish daily Hurriyet reported.

The minister also denied claims that the visit by the Iranian president did not produce a formal agreement because of U.S. pressure.
