Iberdrola signs irrigation agreement

Aug. 7, 2008 at 10:57 PM

MADRID, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Spanish utility Iberdrola announced it will power irrigators throughout the country.

Iberdrola announced it signed an agreement with the National Federation of Spanish Irrigators Communities.

Under the agreement, Iberdrola will supply power to more than 700,000 farmers and 300 local irrigator groups, a spokesman said.

Fenacore is the national organization that includes all the local groups that oversee and distribute irrigation water supplies. On average, the group uses 800 gigawatt hours of electricity per year.

Iberdrola said it hopes to help the group provide enough electricity without a severe environmental impact.
