OVALLE, Chile, July 31 (UPI) -- Chile will be home to the largest wind project in the region, said Spain's Grupo Enhol.
The energy company announced that in conjunction with Chilean developer Haciendas Talinay, it will build the $1 billion wind farm.
The wind farm will have an initial 500-megawatt capacity once it is complete, but it will be built in three phases. Grupo Enhol said in its statement it expects construction of all three phases to be complete by the end of 2011; the first phase is scheduled to begin next year.
More than 243 turbines will be installed in the project, and it will also include both underground and above-ground transmission lines to bring power from the wind farm to nearby towns.
Enhol said it hopes, in addition to clean energy, it can bring new jobs and an economic boost to the area.
