PARIS, June 13 (UPI) -- France's Areva has signed a deal with Kazakhstan's Kazatomprom.
Areva Chief Executive Officer Anne Lauvergeon said she has signed an agreement in Paris with Mukhtar Dzhakishev, the president of the Kazatomprom national atomic energy company. The goal of the agreement is to further strengthen their partnership on energy endeavors.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Katco uranium extraction joint venture will produce 4,000 tons of uranium a year until 2039. Kazatomprom has a 49 percent stake in Katco and Areva has a 51 percent stake. Areva will be engaged in the complete implementation of the project.
Areva said it also will ensure technical support for the establishment of production of fuel units with a capacity of 1,200 tons a year at the Ulba metals plant of Kazatomprom.
In the new joint venture, the assembly production facility will include a separate line capable of producing 400 tons for French-designed reactors. Fuel pellets for these units will be supplied by Kazatomprom. The joint venture will be selling this product. The remaining 800 tons will be used as fuel for reactors designed by others.
