Interconnector line moves forward in U.K.

LIVERPOOL, England, May 29 (UPI) -- Wave energy in the United Kingdom may be feasible with new cables.

Results from a marine survey to map new high-voltage electricity cables between North Wales and the Republic of Ireland suggest the lines are technically feasible, the Liverpool Daily Post reported.

The East West Interconnector is being developed by EirGrid, an independent electricity transmission system operator in Ireland, and is expected to enable the two-way transmission of power under the Irish Sea beginning in 2012.

The cables will also enable renewable energy to grow and expand through access to the greater British energy market for both imports and exports of energy.

The new cables will be about 160 miles long and will carry 500 megawatts of electricity under the sea from Dublin, coming ashore on the Welsh coast near Prestatyn and then back underground to a converter station and on to a connection point with the national grid.
