NEW DELHI, April 30 (UPI) -- India said it has discovered a substantial amount of gas hydrates in the Krishna Godavari basin off Andhra Pradesh coast.
"Gas hydrate occurrence has also observed in Mahanadi and Andaman offshore areas," Junior Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dinsha Patel told Parliament in a statement Wednesday.
He said detailed studies were planned out to estimate the gas hydrates reserves.
He said that under the action plan, the government would undertake resource estimation of already-discovered gas hydrates, identify gas hydrates bearing sand-dominated reservoirs, carry out pilot production testing and research and development for commercial exploitation of methane from gas hydrates.
He said the government would embark on seismic surveys for locating gas hydrate deposits in the sea. India is exploring the possibility of acquiring technologies for exploitation of methane from gas hydrates.
