NEW DELHI, April 25 (UPI) -- India has estimated 1,894 trillion cubic meters of gas hydrates, the government said Friday.
Junior Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dinsha Patel said the number was based on a bottom-simulating reflector as seen on the seismic line.
He said it is estimated that 1 cubic meter of gas hydrates may yield about 164 cubic meter of gas at atmospheric conditions. He told the upper house of Parliament in a statement that there is no technology available for commercial production of gas from gas hydrates.
"Scientific studies are going on to explore the possibility of developing gas hydrates production technique," Patel said.
Replying to another question, Patel said the government had given top priority for the promotion and use of biofuels, which included biodiesel and bioethanol.
"Considering the importance of promotion and use of biofuels for transportation ... and other applications, the government has issued a notification giving specific responsibilities to various federal ministries and departments," he said.
The government emphasizes use of non-edible oils such as jatropha curcas and pongamia pinnata for the production of biodiesel.
