NEW DELHI, April 24 (UPI) -- India awarded 16 oil and gas blocks in Assam state for exploration and production activities.
Junior Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dinsha Patel said in a statement the blocks were near the banks of the Brahmaputra River.
Patel said these blocks are under various stages of exploration, adding petroleum-exploration licenses for three blocks were yet to be issued. He said Oil India Ltd. plans to carry out a seismic survey as a part of its hydrocarbons exploration activities.
He said OIL was awaiting necessary environmental clearance for the proposed seismic survey operation from Assam state.
"A few non-government organizations had expressed their concern for the survey, fearing ecological imbalance in the river, particularly threat to dolphins present in the river," Patel said.
He said OIL was carrying out an environmental study of the area.
