Gas plants in Indian capital face closures

NEW DELHI, March 18 (UPI) -- Gas plants in New Delhi are facing a severe gas shortage that could lead to the closing of some facilities.

The Times of India reported that over the weekend peak demand was approximately 2,800 megawatts but New Delhi's power plants were only generating 906 megawatts. Their full capacity is about 1,300 megawatts.

"Most of the gas-based plants are generating below capacity due to gas shortage in the northern region. Plants like Gas Turbine and Pragati have been particularly affected," said a senior Power Department official.

The government directed the department to complete maintenance and routine shutdown of all power plants before peak summer sets in from April onward.

"This is most favorable period for us to complete maintenance checks of all generation units as the worst of winters is now over and peak summer is yet to set in," an official said. "By March 31, we will complete maintenance work on all the power plants."
