NEW DELHI, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- India says it has undertaken a phased expansion of the compressed natural gas network.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora told Parliament Friday in order to promote investment from public as well as the private sector for the laying of trunk natural gas pipelines and city/local natural gas distribution networks, the government has enacted the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Act and notified the policy for development of natural gas pipelines and city gas distribution networks.

"Providing of CNG facilities depends upon availability of gas, setting up of necessary infrastructure and economic viability," Deora said. According to information available, piped natural gas is being supplied to 775,119 domestic, 1,287 commercial and 64 industrial consumers all over the country.
