NEW DELHI, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- India says it won't attend three-way talks to finalize the gas pipeline from Iran to India via Pakistan as the issue of transit fees has yet to be resolved.
Iranian Ambassador to India Syed Mahdi Nabizadeh said there was no response from India to Tehran's proposal of a Feb. 12 or 13 meeting on the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. He said technical issues between New Delhi and Islamabad were yet to be finalized.
"According to our policy, we have tried our best to achieve the main objective of arriving at a trilateral agreement," he said. "We are still trying."
Officials of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry said the decision not to attend the talks in Tehran was taken at the highest level. An agreement on the deal has been delayed by almost a year.
The officials said Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora will first go to Pakistan after the conclusion of general elections there Feb. 18 and only then would the possibility of trilateral talks be explored. Deora had a meeting with Pakistan's energy minister in London recently when the invitation to visit Islamabad was made.
The $7.4 billion, 1,700-mile natural gas pipeline from Iran would supply India with 90 million cubic meters per day of gas and Pakistan 60 million cubic meters per day. Talks have been deadlocked for months on two issues: the cost of Iranian gas and how much India will pay Pakistan in transit fees.
The United States opposes the deal.
