LONDON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Energy-saving lightbulbs may trigger migraines, British health experts say.

The warning, along with warnings about mercury content in compact fluorescent and other energy-efficient lightbulbs, comes as many countries are considering mandating their use, the Melbourne Sun reported.

British health officials say they have been inundated with complaints about the fluorescent bulbs. England has mandated all homes use CFLs within four years. Australia has a similar requirement.

Some are calling for the British government to allow an opt-out for people with health problems so they can continue to use old-style bulbs. There have been complaints from people with lupus, an autoimmune disease causing many symptoms, including pain.

Many have concerns that eco-friendly bulbs can trigger dizziness, loss of focus and discomfort among people with epilepsy.

Low-energy light bulbs are miniature versions of the fluorescent strip lights common in offices and kitchens.

Britain's Lighting Association denied that flicker was a problem with modern energy-saving bulbs. Many say the environmental benefits outweigh the possible risk.
