BRASILIA, Brazil, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Brazil's state-owned Petrobras announced a new daily production record of 2.238 million barrels of oil on Christmas Day.
The People's Daily reported that the numbers exceeded Brazil's average oil consumption of 2 million bpd and broke the company's previous record of 1.912 million bpd, set on Oct. 23, 2006.
Petrobras officials attributed the new record to the building of six production platforms in 2007, which added a total of 590,000 bpd to Petrobras' maximum production capacity.
The P-54, a Floating Production Storage and Offloading unit, started production on Dec. 11 in the offshore Roncador field, located in the Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro province.
The platform's maximum production is expected to be achieved in the second half of 2008, when the P-54 will be producing 180,000 barrels of oil a day.
