Abu Dhabi promotes natural gas-run cars

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. is planning to open additional natural gas filling stations next year.

According to the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi, Adnoc Distribution, a unit of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., will build 11 compressed natural gas filling stations within the United Arab Emirates by the end of 2008. The decision was made to promote gas as a more environmentally friendly fuel than oil, the Gulf News reported.

The filling stations will provide CNG for cars and Adnoc Distribution plans to build plants in Abu Dhabi where cars can be converted to run on CNG.

According to EAD, CNG provides easy starting, reliable idling and smooth acceleration and it is often cheaper than gasoline. Converted cars will have a dual fuel option and can continue to run on gasoline.

Abu Dhabi has a goal of converting 20 percent of government cars to CNG cars by January 2012.
