Berlin to remind U.S. of climate promises

Sept. 17, 2007 at 3:09 PM   |   Comments

BERLIN, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Germany wants to remind the United States of its promises regarding climate protection, according to a media report.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to launch a diplomatic climate protection initiative while she attends next week's U.N. meeting in New York, German news magazine Der Spiegel said in its latest edition, which hit the stands Monday.

Merkel especially wants to remind President Bush of his pledge to help curb climate change, Der Spiegel said, after parallel U.S. initiatives have caused some concern in Europe.

Berlin, according to the magazine, mistrusts Bush's climate protection initiative that summons the representatives of 16 nations at the end of this month in Washington.

Key German government officials fear that the U.S.-run conference "undermines" the U.N.-process set for this Dec. in Bali, Indonesia. Germany will send Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel to the conference.
