Azerbaijan, Iran reinforce energy ties

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran can contribute to region security, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said.

Aliyev’s comments Tuesday came following talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Both Azerbaijan and Iran are considering the Nabucco project, which if completed will increase gas exports to Europe.

The proposed $6.74 billion, 2,485-mile Nabucco natural gas pipeline project is slated to run from Turkey via the Balkans to Austria.

The two countries also agreed to meet at a summit in Tehran in October with other Caspian states -- Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan – to break the impasse over the division of access to the sea’s resources.
