Shaw, Duke, build new coal plant

BATON ROUGE, La., July 19 (UPI) -- The Shaw Group announced it was granted a contract with Duke Energy to build a new coal-fired plant and flue gas desulphurization system in North Carolina.

The 800-megawatt supercritical coal-fired plant is a project of Duke Energy Carolinas LLC, and the flue gas system at the Cliffside Stream Station in North Carolina is part of a modernization project.

Supercritical clean coal technology increases reliability, efficiency and fuel flexibility, Duke said in a release. While the total cost of the two projects was not disclosed, Shaw's contract is valued at about $1.29 billion.

"We are excited to continue support (for) Duke's clean energy expansion strategy with this significant EPC contract," said J.M. Bernhard Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of Shaw.

"The supercritical pulverized clean coal technology is more advanced and efficient than conventional coal combustion technologies currently in operation, and we are ready to deliver this important generating facility and air quality control system for our longtime client," Bernhard said. The Shaw Group Inc. provides technology, engineering, procurement, construction, maintenance, fabrication, manufacturing, consulting, remediation and facilities-management services.
