U.K. businesses call for government aid

MANCHESTER, England, May 17 (UPI) -- Cooperative Insurance Services asked the U.K. government for help with access to wind energy.

CIS said there is a lot of red tape surrounding wind energy installation that is preventing companies from using renewable energy, Energy Business Review reported. CIS suggested carbon reduction progress could be made more quickly if hurdles were cleared through government action.

Local bureaucracy, poor planning guidance for councils and lack of a long-term energy strategy and infrastructure are all hampering companies' development of wind energy, CIS said. Without help, it will be more difficult to reach the 10 percent renewable goal by 2010.

"Climate change is making U.K. businesses look at their environmental impact and explore ways to lower their carbon emissions. Switching their energy supply to green electricity is an important step but there is currently too much red tape putting companies off," said David Anderson, chief executive of Cooperative Financial Services.

CIS submitted a list of common problems faced by businesses along with possible solutions from the government. As businesses are responsible for approximately 40 percent of Britain's carbon dioxide emissions, it is important the government take note, CIS said.
