EPA recognizes largest REC purchase

WASHINGTON, May 2 (UPI) -- In the trend of individuals taking the initiative on environmental responsibility, PepsiCo announced the purchase of 100 percent renewable energy certificates.

All of the electricity used in PepsiCo's U.S. facilities will be offset by renewable credits, the company announced Monday. The purchase is the largest REC purchase to date, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

PepsiCo is one of the largest food and beverage companies in the world. In 2006 its annual revenues were more than $35 billion -- a demonstration that it can pay to go green.

"Energy is a key focus for PepsiCo within its environmental sustainability agenda," said John Compton, chief executive officer of PepsiCo North America. "The purchase of these RECs is not only in line with our progress to date, but further advances our commitment to sustainability and helps make a positive impact in the communities we serve across the country."

The deal is for 1 billion kilowatt-hours per year for three years. The purchase puts PepsiCo on top of the EPA's list of Top 25 green-power purchasers. Other groups topping the list include Wells Fargo and Co., Whole Foods Market, U.S. Air Force and Johnson & Johnson.

"America is shifting to a 'green culture,' with more and more businesses understanding that environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson.

The deal also involves a partnership with Sterling Planet, a leading retail provider of renewable energy.
