BARRE, Vt., March 6 (UPI) -- Northern Power announced its newly developed wind turbine power converter is available for purchase.

The Vermont-based Distributed Energy Systems Corp. subsidiary released its new Flexphase technology power modules Friday.

"Our new power converters for the wind market are grid-friendly, because they effectively manage the variable power output of wind turbines to ensure maximum power output and minimum disruption to the transmission and distribution system," said Jim Stover, power electronics business manager or Northern Power.

The Flexphase technology implemented in the converter can be used for turbines that generate between 500 kilowatts to 5 megawatts and for the three most commonly used types of generators. The power circuit in the converter allows power to be converted without the installation and use of so many transistors and capacitors.

Each converter has internal sensors, protection and calibration and is designed to withstand severe grid or wind farm disruptions. They are also compliant with global low voltage ride through requirements.

Grid connection has continually been a major obstacle in the wind power indstry, along with regulatory and supply roadblocks.

"Our power converters help wind power to become an even more practical solution for the alternative energy marketplace," Stover said.
