SWEETWATER, Texas, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- FPL Energy, LLC and Texas State Technical College, West Texas, recently partnered to educate and train students in wind turbine technology.
The two say the coordination is an effort to meet increased demand for skilled employees in the wind energy business in Texas and surrounding areas, Renewable Access reported.
FPL Energy will give TSTC West Texas subject-matter experts and faculty adjuncts to help build the curriculum. In addition, the students will have the chance to meet FPL Energy wind experts and participate in paid internships within FPL Energy wind.
"As the largest owner and operator of wind turbines in Texas and throughout the world, having a well trained workforce is critically important to our future growth and ultimate success," said Manny Sanchez, vice president of Wind Operations for FPL Energy.
West Texas offers a two-year degree and will now work to identify and recruit candidates for the program through marketing efforts and community learning opportunities. TSTC and FPL want the curriculum to meet the future needs of FPL Energy.
Texas is the state with the largest wind energy generation capacity and FPL Energy invested about $1 billion in Texas wind projects in 2006. FPL Energy has 12 projects operating with a net capacity of more than 1,600 megawatts.
