New, possibly more efficient turbine

LONDON, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- London-based Stormblade Turbine Ltd. recently finished design of and testing on a new, ultra-efficient wind turbine.

The turbine works by accelerating the wind onto the blades making it efficient at low as well as high wind speeds. The design is bird and bat friendly because all of the dangerous moving parts are enclosed, according to a company press release.

It's also designed to operate quietly. The mechanical noises associated with commercial wind turbines are not emitted by the Stormblade. Other new benefits include less drag, more power per rotation, less maintenance and smaller size.

The turbine also has a higher generating capacity using less parts; in theory it will be able operate at any wind speed. It converts up to 70 percent of wind power into electricity and is operational from 7 miles per hour to 120 miles per hour.

The operating wind range and percentage of generation are much higher than the average capability of the traditional design.

The animal friendly design and neighbor-friendly noise emission are expected to quell critics and build more support for wind power, the company said.

Stormblade was aided by the London Manufacturing Advisory Service in analysis and identifying potential partnerships. More than a dozen companies have already shown interest in the new technology.
