MOSCOW, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Russia's Itera international group of companies started Thursday to cut gas supplies to Georgia over outstanding debts.
The RIA-Novosti news agency reported that six Georgian regions are among those affected: Marneuli, Khashuri, Telavi, Zestaponi, Sighaghi and Dedoplistsqaro, all in Georgia's east.
The cutoff began at 9 a.m., RIA-Novosti said.
"The gas supply will be resumed only after the debts have been paid off," the company said.
The regions collectively owe Itera $6 million.
Georgia's Rustavi-2 television reported that Dedoplistsqaro, and Gardabani are without gas. Zestaponi and Khashuri are set to lose supplies Friday.
Marneuli, Sighnaghi and Telavi have been given until deadlines Dec. 25 and 28 to pay their debts, the television said.
Itera officials rejected allegations that the cutoff was political in motive.
Itera "is not interfering in politics. It has a purely economic focus. It is not shaping policy either on the Russian market or on the Georgian market. Therefore, I completely rule this out," said Irakli Nikoleishvili, deputy director-general of the Itera Georgia. "This is simply about you not paying me for the gas I supplied."
