
WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- The sudden death of Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov Thursday throws into uncertainty the future of the country's vast energy resources.
Niyazov, 66, died from heart failure, RIA-Novosti news agency reported.
There was no immediate indication what the government's next step would be and Niyazov, who had ruled the country with an iron fist, had selected no successor.
The former Soviet republic has proven oil reserves of roughly 546 million barrels, according to the Oil and Gas Journal. Production has doubled from 110,000 bbl/d in 1992 to 260,000 bbl/d in 2004, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the Department of Energy's data arm.
The country is also rich in natural gas reserves with proven reserves of approximately 71 trillion cubic feet, according to the Oil and Gas Journal. Production in 2004 was 2 Tcf, according to the EIA.
