HELSINKI, Finland, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he is optimistic about energy relations with Finland.

"Finland is one of our principal partners in the energy sphere," he said after meeting with Finnish President Tarja Halonen in Helsinki on Wednesday.

The comments were reported by the Itar-Tass news agency.

More than 90 percent of Finland's energy needs are met through Russian supplies.

The comments come as the European Union, of which Finland is the current president, debates what many see as the over-reliance of the EU on Russian supplies.

Those fears followed the decision in January by Russia's Gazprom to cut off gas supplies - temporarily - to Ukraine over a pricing dispute. That led to reduced flows to the rest of Europe.

European energy security has become a key matter of concern in the bloc, especially among its newer members such as Poland that were once part of the Moscow-led Warsaw Pact nations.
