India for E10 by June '07

NEW DELHI, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- India's Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry has said it hopes to begin gasoline with 10 percent ethanol by June 2007.

There might be challenges, however. The ministry's plan to blend gasoline with 5 percent ethanol has missed three deadlines - Oct. 1, Nov. 1 and Nov. 15. The program is yet to take off nationwide.

The ministry in a meeting with ethanol producers suggested that June 2007 could be the deadline for the 10 percent blend.

"If the 5 percent blending works well and if the industry commits to supply the required ethanol, the 10 percent blending program could take off by June next year," the ministry said.

The ministry said it hopes the 5 percent blending program cam be implemented across the country by December.

The program has had a bumpy ride so far with only three states -- Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Goa - implementing it successfully.
