Gazprom to gasify Sakhalin island

MOSCOW, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Gazprom, the world's No. 1 gas company, and the Sakhalin Region agreed Wednesday to gasify the region.

At a news conference in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Aleksandr Annenkov, deputy chairman of the Gazprom board of directors, said the gas for the process will be taken from the offshore Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 oil and gas projects, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.

The Sakhalin TPP-1 thermal power - plant, the island's main source of electrical power and hot water, will be the first to switch to gas and subsequently, gas will be recovered from the Sakhalin-3 project, the news agency reported.
