NEW DELHI, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- India needs to expand power generation six fold over the next 25 years to boost industrial production, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday.

"Electricity is the most essential infrastructure for any industry and without it industrial development is not possible," he said after laying the foundation stone for the Western Region Grid Strengthening scheme at the town of Chincholi. ""The way India is making progress, electricity consumption is also increasing at a rapid rate. Some experts feel that energy consumption will increase six fold in the next 25 years."

His comments were reported by the semi-official Press Trust of India.

He said to meet demand India would have to increase power generation from 120,000 MW to 800,000 MW.

Chronic power shortage remain common in India where much of the country, including the capital, New Delhi, face daily power cuts. The government is taking steps to combat the shortfall in a bid to boost the country's economy and attract more foreign investment.
