Kazkhstan, Russia talk nuclear cooperation

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, July 26 (UPI) -- Russia and Kazakhstan may join forces to create new nuclear plants with the hopes of offering energy to other countries.

Daniyal Akhmetov, prime minister of Kazakhstan, said the proposed plant units could generate 300 megawatts of power and put the two countries in a position to enter foreign energy markets, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports.

"I think that we should have a unified energy policy in all spheres including nuclear industry and nuclear energy," Akhmetov said.

Both Russian and Kazakh experts have created proposals of various projects, including uranium extraction and enrichment.

Akhmetov said the highest priority is a new nuclear plant.
