Russia: Sangtuda-1 to meet deadlines

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, April 13 (UPI) -- Tajikistan's Sangtuda-1 hydroelectric power plant will meet its construction deadlines, a Russian energy official has said.

Avesta Web site reported Thursday that Anatoli Chubais, chairman of the board of the Unified Energy System of Russia, told journalists in Dushanbe Wednesday: "The task to finish the construction in time is a tough one. Today's meeting with subcontractors was very serious.

"...We should launch the first unit in March 2007. The dam across Vakhsh River should be completed by any means in November 2006."

Financing for the project was proceeding as scheduled, Chubais confirmed, adding that both Russia and Tajikistan were fulfilling their respective ends of the bargain.

"We always feel President Rahmonov's constant attention and support on all the issues relating to the construction -- from taxes to ongoing tasks. There is no discord and unresolved issues between Tajikistan and the Unified Energy System of Russia.

"However, there is a great number of work-related and organizational issues that should be resolved on a regular basis," he said.
